Packing for Holiday: Makeup

*Hey, sorry about my recent lack of posts! I am currently on holiday and the internet connection is a lot worse than I had anticipated. This post was meant to go up a while ago but I couldn't get good enough wifi :(( Also, the lack of connection meant that I could not upload my photos saved on dropbox. But I have decided to post this without images in hopes it is useful to someone! Sorry about this awfully boring looking post, I will be back to normal shortly!!*

Following on from my last blog post on packing, I thought I would write the post on makeup that I promised. It's always tricky trying to limit your makeup stash and deciding what makeup is best to take, but hopefully I can help!

The bags

Just like with your other toiletres, you will probably want 2 makeup bags. One very small one that can go in your hand luaggage (and you can carry in your purse during the holiday) and a bigger one n your main luggage.

In your hand luggage bag you will probably only need the very minimal makeup that you're wearing to the airport (if any.) This could include your powder or foundation, lip balm/gloss/stick, concealer and maybe a little mascara or eyeliner if you want. As you're only travelling, you don't need to wear much makeup at all but you might want to carry around the basics so you can touch up if you're feeling grim throughout the day.
It is less of a risk with makeup as it is toiletries, however still be cautious of restrictions on liquids in your hand luggage. You don't want your new foundation or lip gloss being confiscated at security! To avoid this all together, try taking as many solid makeup products in your hand luggage as possible as these are not restricted.

But what makeup will you need in your main luggage?

Basically, what makeup should you take on holiday... here we go!

Base

I would deffiutley recommend taking a primer on holiday, even if you don't normally wear one. Whether it's the hot weather conditions or adventurous activities, your makeup will probably need help sticking to your face throughout the day. Brightening primers (e.g that gal or this Maybelline one) are great because they're not at all sticky and give your face a summery glow. Howver if you struggle with oily skin (especially during the summer), you will probably want to take a mattifying primer to stop your face from becoming a hot greasy mess.

Foundation versus powder is always the big debate when it comes to summer holiday makeup. I normally take a little foundation (decanted into a small container), but I tend to use it less and less troughout the holiday. This is because you will likely be getting your tan on so the shade will no longer be correct. Plus who can be bothered to go through their whole foundation routine on a hot morning when you're just going to the beach or for an iceream anyway?

A good alternative to a full coverage foundation is a tinted moisturiser. There are so many forms of this but the prominent ones are tinted moisturisers or BB creams. Although they are slightly different products, they are the same idea. There is lighter coverage but it is good for your skin as it is a moisturiser; this also leads to a less cakey/sticky foundation look. They normally contain SPF as well which is great in the summer. There are loads of great tinted moisturisers/ BB creams in the drugstores right now, being summer. Garnier has the main one but most brands have come out with their own versions all along the same line.

Of course, if you are not worried about coverage but maybe want to keep your face looking matte, just take a pressed powder or powder foundation. These provide a little coverage but are extremely light and just stop your face from becoming oily. Rimmel does a great stay matte powder! You could pair together a BB cream with a powder to give decent coverage but avoid the sticky foundation look.

Concealer

A lot of being drop concealer in the hotter seasons. Unless you have dark discoloration or imperfections you want to cover, concealer is not a must. However, I am not one of these people! I have extremely dark under eye circles and although having a tan improves it slightly, I still need concealer to avoid looking like I've got a dreadful hangover and zero hours sleep.

Whilst on holiday, if you are likely to get a tan, it is better to take a concealer that is accurate to your skin tone rather than lighter and brightening. This is because if you use a really light product under your eyes you may start to resemble a racoon, rather than someone who's had lots of sleep. Try a corrector such as the Benefit Erase Paste or just a bog standard concealer that matches your skin colour (the Collection Lasting Perfection Concealer is fab!)

Bronze, Blush and Highlight

Summer is when bronze and highlight really come into their own. If you are someone that wears blush, try a peach or light pink for the summer seasons as it's a bit lighter and softer. But if you are not someone that normally wears all 3, use your summer as a chance to show off your bronzing and highlighting skills.

Your summer holiday may be the only time it's acceptable to use that bronzer that you bought without realising it has shimmer in. (I'm talking about the Bourjois chocolate bronzing powder that was unexpectedly glittery.) It's all about the shimmer and glow in the summer! Obviously, I would always recommend buying bronzer without shimmer but it's always fun to whip it out on holiday. Also, for proper contouring you will want a cream contour kit but if you just want to give yourself a healthy bronze glow whilst on holiday, a powder bronzer is perfect to dust over your face.

Same with highlight, you can really use any highlight you want- liquid or powder- as summer is the best time to highlight for a youthful glow. I love the benefit

Mascara and eyeliner

Whilst on holiday, you probably won't want to go full on smokey eye, but sometimes it's nice to give your eyes a bit of definition during the day with mascaras and eyeliners. In summer, it's all about length and elegance rather than big thick clumpy lashes. Bourjous liner effect masacara creates amazing fluttery length which is perfect for a flirty summer look. If you're someone who likes to wear makeup in the pool (which is perfectly fine), I would suggest investing in a good water proof mascara and eyeliner as black makeup eyes is not the look we're going for.

Eye liner wise, try using softer colours such as browns to create a more summery natural look. Or, in contrast, experiment with bright coloured eyeliner as in the summer, pops of colour can look stunning. You kind of want to avoid heavy dark eyeliner as it's quite draining (and annoying to apply.) If you always use black, I suggest using a black powder on the inner water line because instead of leaving a very heavy eye look, it creates the appearance of defined eyes and thicker lashes without loads of makeup.

Eye shadow

Again, around your eyes it's all about bright or light colours! Bronze or champagne are classics for summer but if you're looking to spice it up a bit, try bright colours like pink, blue or green. If you're tanned, a camoflauge green eye looks absoultkey killer, it's my go to summer eveing eye look. Products wise, I wouldn't recommend taking loads of powder eye shadows. Not only is it a nuisance to carry, but it will very likely come of if you get at all oily during the day. Instead try eye shadow creams (like the Maybelline cream gel eyeshadow) . They're easy to apply and the Maybelline ones in particular come in amazing bronze and gold colours.

Lip products

I love a good lip product. And on holiday, so does your lips. Make sure you bring at least one good lip balm (preferably in your hand luggage) to apply when your lips feel dry and chapped. (Which is inevitable due to the hot weather and constant forced smiling for photos..) Chubby sticks are another great option (and many cheaper brands have done their own knock offs) because they are moisturising but provide good colour. They are probably better than most lip glosses that just get sticky, awkward and the colour pay off isn't great. But for when you go out and want a great lip colour, you can't beat a good lipstick. Pinks and peaches are acceptable in the summer but be really careful that it's pretty rather than being a tacky colour you might regret later. Red is also nice in the summer but when buying the red lipstick, make sure it's cherry red rather than plum red. Cherry red is bright and lifts your whole face whereas plum red is a darker colour probably more appropriate for autumn/winter.

That's all I can think of for now, just take your favourite makeup and don't stress about it too much. Try to limit yourself and you should really be trying to enjoy the holiday more rather than constantly worrying what your makeup looks like!

Hope this helped and see you next time,
Laura Stone x
